Using shocking values

dg-perfume-ad.jpg
Analisis
The first thing we can see on this ad is the picture quite disturbing: It represents men and women’s nudes bodies, all together, mixed up and down in different ways. We can not see their sex because they hide their parts of body just to preserve their intimacy. There is a white dazzling light under them in order to focus on the bodies. The name of the perfume for men is “Masculine,” which is darker bottle; the name of the perfume for women is “Feminine,” which is lighter bottle, as to note that the perfume for men is stronger. It is a mean to get a message away: “It smells strong, it represents virility”. Perfume bottles are up and down to insist on the similarity between humans and the product.
Opinion
D&G uses this picture to impress people and this is a success. In one hand, marketers are aware that using shoching values like sex is good for saling. One important tenchnique in perfume advertising is to highlight the product through one of major theme of the life because people are concerned by the subject so finally, they are more attracted by the product. In the ohter hand, sex sells it is true but there are some limits to respect. Dolce&Gabanna’s suggests more independence of both genders and free interplay of sexuality, ranging from heterosexuality to homesexuality, from monogamy to group sex. I personaly think that it is too expressive.Where are limits of a marketing strategy?
Compared with the ad below representing the perfume “Scent to bed”, do you think it is too explicit?

A scandal or not?

At that time, a new scandal is in all discussions in England: Is that perfume ad too suggestive for appearing in teens magazines?
This perfume advertisement promotes the perfume “Scent to bed” created by Fashion Label french Connection United Kingdom”( FCUK company). It appears in teens magazines as “Seventeen” or “Teen People” few days ago. Parents are outraged by the explicitness of this ad because it shows two teenagers together who are going to have sexual relations.
The company defends its racy ads by noting the hypersexual environment in which teens live but parents refuse to accept teens having sex or being influenced by any advertisement. How to react to this scandal? This is a real problem?
Analysis
The name of perfume is “Scent to bed” which means the perfume to the bed. It is very explicit. Moreover, the name of the company is Fcuk which is fun because when you remplace the ‘u’ by the ‘c’ it becomes Fuck.  All the ad is focus on teenagers and their sexual relations even the product and the name of the company are explicit but with a lot of fun. However, we can note that the image is not at all scandalous. In fact, there are two teenagers together. The man, bare-chested, has his hand on the girl light dressed but we can see nothing of their body. She is smiling and he is looking at her. The image is in black and white but not really the two perfumes.
After this short analisis, what do you think about this scandal?
Opinion
For my part, it is true that teenagers live in an hypersexual environment everyday. It is not like a sexual revolt because it is a trend but there is a shift in attitudes as regards sexuality and younger people. All adults are aware about sexual activites of their children; They live a volatile stage when they grow up to become adults. They have an awkward age, period of their first sexual experience. Marketers understand this new evolution so they react by playing with it. They use moments, activities where teenagers can identify them easily. They have to do this to stay up-to-date and cool on teenagers’ minds. The first sexual experience is one of their current problems.
In addition to this, teenagers can see sexual image everywhere in the daily life: On TV, on magazines, in all media indeed. Here the novelty is that teenagers are actors in the ad instead of adults. It is the mean to show them they are new consumers and new actors in the adults’ world. By this way, teenagers feel like adults and believe they are more independant.
The real problem here is not that ad but the generation gap between teenagers and some narrow-minded parents. This ad reprensents reality without vulgarity. It is neither rude nor insolent. Teenagers reject some parents’ values so there exist quarrels but everybody live these moments one day.
This marketing strategy is ingenious. This ad shocks and everybody speaks about it. The Word-of-Mouth is the better publicity for a product in particular in teens group who like to be in contradiction with the the older generation.

A perfume, a dream

cinema by Yves Saint Laurent
In order to insist on the dream provocated by a perfume, I want to show you this ad. The perfume is Cinema by Yves Saint Laurent. Companies know all the marketing strategies to sell their product. That’s why they use some methods to permit women to escape to the daily life. When a woman perfumes her, she identifies her to the ambassador in the publicity. Then, a famous woman is better to sell the perfume.
On this publicity, the woman is famous, on-light, well dressed, with a lot of men around her. She has success in love and in her life in general. We can suppose that she is rich and that she has all she needs. This image of a spread woman is a factor of success for the perfume.

CHANEL ad comments

Description
The advertisement “Her kiss, her smile, her perfume” created for the perfume “Chanel n°5″ is very captivating and curious to analyse. Indeed, it looks like a movie where the well-known actress is Nicole Kidman.
The actress is surprised by all photographs around her. The video is now in black and white in order to contrast with the first stage. She runs and seems elusive in a pink dress with feathers like a bird. She is frightened by a flash and panics. The scandal exploses. Nicole Kidman disappears in a taxi and takes flight with a foreign and unknown man. The consumers are exciting because is surprising and quite risky. Finally, she takes refuge in his apartment. The moment of the kiss arrives; Then, it is very intensive, romantic and sensual because the man is sexy and represents virility. Fireworks display behind provoke surprise. At dawn, after this special night of love, she leaves. The man is alone on the brand board and life continues as before. Nicole Kidman appears, inocent, feminine and mysteious on the red carpet, flooded with photographs. She looks back his love and smiles. When she leaves, we can see the logo “Chanel n°5″ in diamonds, representing beauty and luxe.
 Analyse
Chanel is the only perfume company to create this type of small movies. This strategy is efficient and original. Cinema with famous people represents a dream world for some of us. The Chanel’s target is women who dream to become famous or to live that sort of exciting story with a beautiful young man. Chanel understood that women need to identify with the famous woman. The ad created like a movie permits women to feel excited by the product. It is a sale strategy because they want to buy this perfume to feel love and beautiful at the same time and look like to Nicole Kidman. Having this perfume, it is like to go to the unknown and escape to the daily life.
Nicole Kidman is perfect to endorse this brand. She has been a model for Chanel since 2003. She represents beauty, feminity and sensuality. The choice of  actors is evident. The ad is imaginated around the movie “Moulin rouge” where Nicole Kidman is one of the main actress. Paris, with the moulin rouge, gives a french touch to the ad. That explains the romantic kiss at the top of the building, even if we know that it is a french stereotype.
This ad is effective because everybody know the movie “Moulin rouge”. Moreover, the choice of Nicole Kidman is appropriate. Globally, the ad is known by all women because it is different from others publicities of perfume. The slogan is in all minds “Her kiss, her smile, her perfume”. The perfume is considerated as a characteritic of the woman. Adding to this, the Chanel logo is present everywhere at every moment: when there are the kiss, when the man is alone in his apartement and above all at the end. The goal is to leave a mark in the mind of the consumer.
Chanel know marketing strategies to sell its perfume with originality. That’s why this company is well-known all over the world.

Education system in shackles

From Marion Tharsis, via e-mail
I had a good English education which has enabled me to earn a respectable income in Malaysia in the private sector owing to my proficiency in the language which has never deprived me of losing my own identity and my own mother tongue.
So, I can very confidently state that now I have a good command of several languages which is the typical identity of a progressive nation like Malaysia with a population gifted with many kinds of talents and characteristics.
There is no denying whether we like it or not that English language has become a language of the world for business, commerce, education and scientific research and the ensuing findings that so vital for human development, are written in that language.
In this 21st century, English stands supreme and all scientific and medical developments to name a few, are chronicled in that language and if one has only a marginal knowledge about the language, one tends to misinterpret or totally lose the gist of the subject or research paper.
That does not mean we are degrading or undermining the importance of our own national identity and language. It can move side by side with the English language and give us the pride and dignity of a progressive and a visionary nation.
Sadly, Malaysia hitherto, has never seen an Education Minister with a proper educational and academic qualification and thus be in a position to see the real educational needs of the country and implement the proper criteria of vision and foresight.
Education is the survival of the nation and the young minds must have a proper guidance not just for them to acquire 10 or 15 distinctions but have the ability to analyse and see in broader perspective and not have a restrictive and confined thinking which most employers today can attest today as being the trend.
In Malaysia, education policies change like we change our sweaty and used clothing. Each education minister though grossly unqualified to make a proper national decision, relies on an one-sided and biased advice to make his final decision while discarding the valuable input of people in reputable positions and being true academicians with vast and invaluable experience and exposure in the educational field.
English has always being a foreign language to me and a legacy of the British Empire who purportedly known to have plundered the territories they occupied  but they have also introduced and taught us something which we cannot deny that has brought us from being a nation of rubber and tin, to a nation competing with the best of the best of today. Incidentally, rubber was introduced into then Malaya from Brazil and the tin industry was developed by the British.
Consequently, to completely remove English from the mainstream subjects in schools and only confine it as a foreign language, will give us a pathetic and embarrassing outcome.
Ultimately it should not be construed as worshipping English at the expense of our own national identity. However, it should be reviewed and looked at by Malaysians as a language that is closely tied up with our survival in a crowded  environment where everyone looks into providing not just tax havens but a work force that understands and able to work in cohesion with the required norms and conditions of middle and upper management teams.
Serious thought therefore is earnestly solicited from the government  of which some of them are still the legacy of the so called British colonial inheritance to see the vast advantages in a free and pragmatic manner for the future of all Malaysians. Education surpasses race and religion and what we sow now is what we are going reap in the future.
It is and never should be played in the political arena just to gain supremacy and continued rule. Educational policies if properly implemented, paves the way for growth and survival in a very confined and competitive world that is expected to be more constrained and choosy  in the coming years.

She was not beautiful!

She was not beautiful.Nothing special about her was extraordinary.Nothing about her made her stand out in a crowd. She grew up in a family of six and being the eldest, she learned responsibility at an early age.
As she grew stronger and brighter, she instilled a sort of light and cheer to whomever she met.She was not beautiful, but she made others feel better about themselves. She met a rebel boy who thinks he is all man, befriending him,she teaches him.She teach him how to read and a little boost, the man needed to go to college, they become fast friends and  she fell fast in love with her rugged handsome student.
The 'man' then finds himself in love with a girl.A girl who was so beautiful. Her hair as a hallow of light around her.Her eyes the bluest blue of the ocean.'Like an angel'.The girl swallow her lumps at her throat. She was not beautiful, she did not posses the heart of the one he loved, but she  did not care.As long as he was happy, she would be happy,or she tried to.She helped write the most beautiful letters to his angel. All the time visioning it was she herself receiving those very letters. And so the girl helped him choose the right clothes, say the right words, and buy the right give to his angel.
His angel brought him much joy and much pain to the girl who cried behind her smiles. But that never stopped her from giving more than she will ever receive.   Then one day,the angel he love left him  for another man.A richer more successfull man.The boy was stunned and was so hurt,he did not speak for days. The girl went to him and he borrowed her shoulder and she cried with him.
He was hurt and she was too.Time went by and so wound heal.Th boys realizes something about his tutor.Something never he realizes before. How her laughter sounded heavenly and how her smiles brightened up the darkest days.or how simply beautiful she looked to him!.
More than a week,he did not look his 'angel' at a  college. One day,he found out that the beautiful girl he fell in love with had a brain tumor that put her into a coma. The doctor were grim and the family decided to let her go.
One final time he got to see her.He held her hand.He stroked her hair and he cried for his beautiful girl.He cried, but it was too late. The beautiful girl was buried and the heaven broke.Out a beautiful spring shower,a cry for their loss. She was the most beautiful girl in the world and she had taught the rebel boy man to love and what it  is to be loved. She was the most beautiful girl in the world.
Look around us.Aren't there a lot  of plain face?Take a good look.A real good look or you might just miss out that beautiful person.

SMOKING IS COOL?

Smoking has become a new phenomenon among students.Smoking is now a common acturly among students in primary and secondary schools.Shops and stalls are now crowded with these smokers especially after  school. How can this happen?and more importantly why?The answer that we seek lies within the smokers themselves. We use one smoker as our example.
After school,a young male teenager is seen walking into restaurant near a school. He sit down on a chairs and orders a drink. He take a sip of his drink and waits for his friend to join him. This is when his usual activity starts. He reaches a deep into his pocket and take out a red box.He takes a single cigaratte from he box and places it between his lips, lights it and takes one draw ofter another.
So,is he cool?Does he look cool?Does he know that for every draw from the cigarette he inhales about 4000 different, identifiable chemical agents?43 of these chemicals agents are identified as cancer causing  agents know as carcinogen.Well, actually every draw that he takes increases  his chances for cancer and decreases his life.Do you think that's cool?
Many of today smokers are influenced by their friends. They have been told that smoking makes them look sophisticated.Smoking not only cause addiction but also other side effects. Some of these are bad coughs and shortage of breath. These are identified as symptoms of emphysema. This is a condition where the lining of the walls of the lung become thin and subsequently looses its power to expel.
Things does not stop here.Smoking causes a yellowish tinge to appear on the skin.Elastic and collagen formation decreases and finally comes lung cancer. So what are you waiting for?If your value your life and the lives around you.Say 'no' to cigarettes.Dare to quit.Today!!!Better still don't even start

what should i do with my life?

It's time to define the new era. Our faith has been shaken. We've lost confidence in our leaders and in our institutions. Our beliefs have been tested. We've discredited the notion that the Internet would change everything (and the stock market would buy us an exit strategy from the grind). Our expectations have been dashed. We've abandoned the idea that work should be a 24-hour-a-day rush and that careers should be a wild adventure. Yet we're still holding on.
We're seduced by the idea that picking up the pieces and simply tweaking the formula will get the party started again. In spite of our best thinking and most searing experience, our ideas about growth and success are mired in a boom-bust mentality. Just as LBOs gave way to IPOs, the market is primed for the next engine of wealth creation. Just as we traded in the pinstripes and monster bonuses of the Wall Street era for T-shirts and a piece of the action during the startup revolution, we're waiting to latch on to the new trappings of success. (I understand the inclination. I've surfed from one boom to the next for most of my working life -- from my early days as a bond trader to my most recent career as a writer tracking the migration of my generation from Wall Street to Silicon Valley.)
There's a way out. Instead of focusing on what's next , let's get back to what's first . The previous era of business was defined by the question, Where's the opportunity? I'm convinced that business success in the future starts with the question, What should I do with my life? Yes, that's right. The most obvious and universal question on our plates as human beings is the most urgent and pragmatic approach to sustainable success in our organizations. People don't succeed by migrating to a "hot" industry (one word: dotcom) or by adopting a particular career-guiding mantra (remember "horizontal careers"?). They thrive by focusing on the question of who they really are -- and connecting that to work that they truly love (and, in so doing, unleashing a productive and creative power that they never imagined). Companies don't grow because they represent a particular sector or adopt the latest management approach. They win because they engage the hearts and minds of individuals who are dedicated to answering that life question.
This is not a new idea. But it may be the most powerfully pressing one ever to be disrespected by the corporate world. There are far too many smart, educated, talented people operating at quarter speed, unsure of their place in the world, contributing far too little to the productive engine of modern civilization. There are far too many people who look like they have their act together but have yet to make an impact. You know who you are. It comes down to a simple gut check: You either love what you do or you don't. Period.
Those who are lit by that passion are the object of envy among their peers and the subject of intense curiosity. They are the source of good ideas. They make the extra effort. They demonstrate the commitment. They are the ones who, day by day, will rescue this drifting ship. And they will be rewarded. With money, sure, and responsibility, undoubtedly. But with something even better too: the kind of satisfaction that comes with knowing your place in the world. We are sitting on a huge potential boom in productivity -- if we could just get the square pegs out of the round holes.
Of course, addressing the question, What should I do with my life? isn't just a productivity issue: It's a moral imperative. It's how we hold ourselves accountable to the opportunity we're given. Most of us are blessed with the ultimate privilege: We get to be true to our individual nature. Our economy is so vast that we don't have to grind it out forever at jobs we hate. For the most part, we get to choose. That choice isn't about a career search so much as an identity quest. Asking The Question aspires to end the conflict between who you are and what you do. There is nothing more brave than filtering out the chatter that tells you to be someone you're not. There is nothing more genuine than breaking away from the chorus to learn the sound of your own voice. Asking The Question is nothing short of an act of courage: It requires a level of commitment and clarity that is almost foreign to our working lives.
During the past two years, I have listened to the life stories of more than 900 people who have dared to be honest with themselves. Of those, I chose 70 to spend considerable time with in order to learn how they did it. Complete strangers opened their lives and their homes to me. I slept on their couches. We went running together. They cried in my arms. We traded secrets. I met their families. I went to one's wedding. I witnessed many critical turning points.
